It was in 2004 when isolated and cut off from the world, my band of brothers and I held onto the icy heights surrounded by 25 feet of snow. Cold to the bone, I rummaged through my bag and found this book tucked into one of the pockets. With no other choice for diverting attention, I started reading James R. McDonough’s book Platoon Leader and got initiated into the “follow me” ethos. These intelligible words would remain as a beacon for me in the next 20 years of service life and empower me on numerous missions.

“Fear itself is not shameful. In fact, the absence of fear in the face of combat would be a suspicious abnormality of character. The challenge lies in not denying fear, but in being able to function in the face of it.”

“Leadership is the ability to determine the objective and the path, inspire others to follow you, and weather the storms along the way.”

Leadership is more than just a title; it’s a responsibility that involves guiding, inspiring, and supporting your team towards achieving common goals. Whether you’re a seasoned leader or just starting your leadership journey, adhering to key principles can significantly enhance your effectiveness and the overall success of your team. Here are some essential principles that I tried to follow ever since that cold and memorable night.

Follow the Rules

Follow Orders

Follow Ethical Standards

Follow Best Practices

Follow Through on Commitments

Follow Up on Tasks and Projects

Follow Safety and Health Guidelines

Follow Strategic Goals

Follow a Balanced Approach

Follow Feedback Loops

These principles can create a structured, fair, and supportive environment that fosters productivity, innovation, and satisfaction among team members. Leadership is an ongoing journey of growth and learning, often forged in the face of adversity and challenging times.
